Drivers in remote parts of the Highlands and Islands should pay less duty on fuel than other parts of the UK, according to the Liberal Democrats.

The party's Highland MPs are trying to get an amendment to the Finance Bill that would see petrol prices cut by nearly 2.5ppl.

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey Liberal Democrat MP Danny Alexander said residents in the Highlands faced a triple whammy: they drive further, pay higher prices, and have little or no public transport alternatives.

About 10% of the Scottish population would be entitled to the discount.
